Winter Fest in Bend, Oregon

Posted By Suzanne Carvlin on February 19, 2011

It’s official! We have now been in the lovely town of Sisters, Oregon for three whole months!

It certainly has been an adventure thus far. Getting to know the area certainly has been fun. This weekend, we are enjoying the Bend, Oregon Winter Fest sponsored by Mt. Bachelor.

Last night, the opening ceremonies kicked off at the Old Mill and we were quite impressed. There were giant snow sculptures greeting us at the entrance, gobo lights illuminated the path, giant tents to keep the vendors covered, there was a rail competition where skiers did tricks off a ramp, a rail and a barrel.

The rail competition was broadcast on a huge screen so the whole crowd cringed and oohed and aahed in unison. More than one male participant fell in a manner that looked extremely painful.

Plus, the Aggrolites played live at the end. It was 30 degrees outside and there were heaters on stage and the base guitarist was wearing one glove, but they managed to put on quite the show. They sounded amazing, too. Good times.

Here is the one photo that turned out on my lousy iPhone camera:

Today, there is an ice sculpting competition and the snowboard rail competition commences. I can hardly wait. The only thing that may complicate matters is that it is totally snowing right now. (Yay!) I am personally recording about 3-4 inches on our deck and the snow continues to fall quickly. This is going to be a fun day!

Way to kick off the weekend, Bend!
