This weekend we discovered Wurstkuche, a fun, hip sausage and beer garden in downtown LA.

We think that it is pronounced “worst cooch”, but that is a very poor name choice for an eatery, so we must be mistaken.

Wurstkuche (two dots above the second “u”) declares that they are purveyors of gourmet sausage and they would be spot-on correct.  Their sausages are amazing.  Duck-Bacon, Sweet Pork, and Snake is what we tried.  Crazy-good.  They even have vegetarian sausage varieties. The Belgian Fries are outstanding as are the scrumptious dipping sauces.  Chipotle-aioli = yum.

I really appreciated their excellent customer service as well.  The line was, as was expected, out the door on a Saturday night.  As the line curved inside, our beer orders were taken (by the owner, I think) and we had a frosty mug of Rasputin in our hands while we waited.  A pretty good way to stand in line as it turns out.   Their sodas were tempting.  Elderflower soda. Victorian Lemonade. Ginger cherry. Cucumber soda.  I’ll have to try one next time.

The vibe is super simple, laid back and cool.  A DJ spun tunes in the rear table area.  The tables were long, beer garden, family style and covered in brown craft paper.  Turns out that the tables are conducive to meeting new people.

We sat across from Matt Roth, who is wrapping up post-production on his new movie, “The Man Who Collected Food” http://www.movieset.com/themanwhocollectedfood and Edward Marshall, who edited the film.  Sounds like great fun.  I am not going to miss it.

The premise is that there is a man who collects food (you may have gathered this from the title).  His food collection is so precious to him that he cannot bring himself to eat any of it.  Hence, in order to sustain himself and not feast on his prized possessions, he resorts to cannibalism.  It’s the obvious choice.

I am not a horror buff, but I love “Sean of the Dead” and “My Name is Bruce.”  From the trailer, this film seems rather tongue in cheek (sounds like the name of a cannibal’s casserole dish).  It really can’t be missed.
